California

California's four-season climate is not only visitor-friendly, but also ideal for growing grapes.

Blessed with sunlight, the growing season for grapes is stable and long, and the climate and topography allow for the cultivation of a variety of grape varieties. California's undulating coastline stretches for 1,300 km, but the cold winds and fog from the sea cool the coastal vineyards, making varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are suited to cool climates, successful. Meanwhile, in vineyards on slopes slightly inland, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are fully ripened by the strong California sunshine.

The soil is also diverse, with sand, clay, loam, granite, volcanic ash, marine soil, and pebbles rolled down the riverbed. Speaking of diversity, California's winemakers are also diverse, as immigrants from around the world flocked to California with grapevines since the 1700s.
