The wine industry has a significant impact on Oregon's economy. The state's wine industry has a total revenue of $1.4 billion, of which more than $800 million comes from winery and vineyard sales. The Oregon wine industry is estimated to support 8,479 jobs. Wine production in Oregon is on a much smaller scale than in California. Oregon's largest winemaker ships 125,000 cases per year, and most others ship fewer than 35,000 cases. Oregon is characterized by a large number of small wineries that ship fewer than 5,000 cases per year. [3] [9] Meanwhile, the largest winery in the United States, E & J Gallo Winery , produced 65 million cases of wine in 2002. [10] Most wineries in Oregon own their own vineyards, but some purchase grapes from the market. There are also a large number of independent vineyards in the state. [3]

Oregon's wine industry focuses on the higher end of the wine market. Oregon winemakers earn higher average revenue per ton and average revenue per case than winemakers in other states. Despite a lower volume of wine produced per winery, average revenue in Oregon is comparable to that in New York and Washington .[8]
